Scopes Trial

The scopes trial was a result of the Butler act being passed in tennessee in 1925
banning the teaching of evolutionary theory and darwinism in public schools.
Science teacher John Scope contested the ban of evolution and was arrested for
teaching it in his classroom. The trail that flowed were called the scopes
trials which became a battle of ideology that divided rural from urban america.
Famed trial lawyer Clarence Darrow came in from chicago to defend John scopes in
the case. These two made up the evolutionary side of the argument while the
creationist were represented by former secretary of state William Jennings Bryan
who after WWI became a fame protestant leader that supported traditionalist
ideology and lead the fight against the spread of evolutionary theory calling it
“an immoral science”.
