This shows how prohibition failed to serve the community in a positive way. It was supposed to ban alcoholism, but just created more of a reckess by leading citizens to hide alcohol and drink it privately.
This shows the citizens who agreed with the banning of alcohol.
In the 1919s the United States ratified a constitutional amendment that made the production distribution and consumption of alcohol illegal. This was the 18th amendment and it a the political hopes and dream of temperance reformers like Bessie Lay the Scovell who campaigned against the use of alcohol and petitioned the government to addresses the issue of alcohol consumption and the neglect in American families. Prohibition had unintended consequences, yes the banning of alcohol did strengthen families and greatly reduce domestic violence however it did not effectively stop people for drinking in secret. Prohibition just forced drinking underground with the rise of speakeasies which were hidden bars that one need to know possible a secret entrance or password in order to be allowed in. Bootlegging, the sale of illegal alcohol became a very profitable business that was picked up but organized and unorganized crime. This lead rise to some of the biggest criminals in history for example al Capone. With the rise of organized crime funded by the bootlegging empire, which was caused by prohibition, gang violence skyrocketed. Prostitution, drugs, robbery and murder all came with the rise of speakeasies. Gang leaders also used their wealth and power to corrupt public officials including police majors and even lawmakers. The Volstead act gave federal officials the right to enforce prohibition however the demand for alcohol and the power of organized crime proved too much for the feds to handle.
